LANSING (WWJ) -- Thanks to the efforts of Washtenaw's Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI), two men are facing criminal sexual conduct charges (CSC) in connection with a 2013 rape case.

Douglas Johnson IV, 33, of Flint, and Rapheal Holman, 32, of Taylor, allegedly assaulted the victim at an April 2013 gathering in Ypsilanti.

A woman told officials that she fell asleep on a couch at the party. When she woke up in the morning, she was on the floor, and her pants were gone. Concerned that she had been raped, the victim went to the hospital, where a sexual assault kit examination was performed.

In 2017, the kit was tested as part of the SAKI project, and DNA evidence led back to Johnson and Holman.

The two defendants are each charged with one count of the following:

CSC 1st -- acting with an accomplice and/or causing personal injury
CSC 2nd -- acting with an accomplice and/or causing personal injury
CSC 3rd -- incapacitated victim
CSC 4th -- incapacitated victim

If convicted of first-degree CSC, the defendants could face life in prison.

"This is the kind of case we are only able to bring charges for through the incredible dedication and vital work of our SAKI teams throughout the state," said Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who announced the charges on Friday.

"Ten years after this assault and we are still able to bring charges, and I want other survivors out there to see that."

The Washtenaw SAKI project is funded by the Michigan Legislature and involves a partnership between the Attorney General's office, the Michigan State Police, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office and SafeHouse Center.

SafeHouse Center is a non-profit providing support and advocacy for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence as well as their children.

Using nationally-recognized best practices, SAKI re-investigates and prosecutes sexual assault cold cases.
