BROWNSTOWN TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - An elaborate plan to break into an ATM in a stolen excavator was thwarted by authorities after bank security caught the heavy equipment smashing into the cash machine early Saturday morning.
Brownstown Township Police said they were made aware of the suspicious activity on June 11 when security at the Chase Bank on Allen Road reported two men in an excavator walloping on a drive-thru ATM.
As police responded to be the scene, the suspects took off in a Chevy Silverado pickup truck, which police said was also stolen.
Officers gave chase on on I-75 near Fort Street before pursing the vehicle on to Dearborn Street and into southwest Detroit where the suspects got away.
One social media user from the area said on Facebook that a storage facility next door to Chase Bank is undergoing some work; they speculate that is where the crooks got the excavator from.

Police said there is plenty of evidence that may help them identify and locate the alleged thieves in the Chevy, but are still asking for help from the public.
The latest attempt to break into a cash machine comes after suspects tried and failed to steal the ATM from a Chase Bank in Brighton on Memorial Day -- it is not clear if the two incidents are related.
Anyone who may have seen something suspicious has been asked to call the Brownstown Township Police Department at 734-675-1300.
