WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) -- A reputed member of a local mafia family has a deadline today to pay up on his taxes, or face jail time.
WWJ’s Charlie Langton reports that Jack Giacalone will be in a federal court to make a payment on a 20-year-old, $537,000 delinquent tax debt. Giacalone claims he has no money.
The convicted gambler -- who is also known as “Jackie” and “The Kid” -- is the son of Vito William "Billy Jack" Giacalone.
His uncle, Anthony “Tony Jack” Giacalone, was supposed to meet with Teamster President Jimmy Hoffa on the day he disappeared in 1975. Gangster Report calls Tony Jack a suspect in "dozens of gangland slayings" and said he "enjoyed using his reputation as the villainous mastermind of the infamous (Hoffa) kidnapping and assassination as currency in the underworld."
As for his nephew, according to the Detroit News, U.S. District Judge George Caram Steeh ruled that today is the final day that the 70-year-old West Bloomfield resident can make a $14,100 installment on his debt, or he will be sent to prison.
Giacalone has previously served short stints in federal prison on charges of gambling and conspiracy. In 2007, he was acquitted of racketeering charges.
