DEARBORN HEIGHTS (WWJ) – A 14-year-old boy has been charged for allegedly shooting another teen in the face Monday afternoon in Dearborn Heights.
Police officials believe the shooting, which happened around 3:30 p.m. in the area of Joy Road and Outer Drive, was accidental. A 16-year-old Detroit boy was taken to the hospital after being shot.
The 14-year-old from Dearborn Heights, whose name was not released, was charged as a juvenile with careless discharge causing injury or death.
When officers responded to a home in the 8430 block of Grayfield Street they found the 16-year-old with a gunshot wound to his forehead. He was said to be in critical condition Monday evening but his condition was not updated Tuesday.
Authorities believe the younger teen was handling the gun when it accidentally discharged. He then allegedly fled the scene before turning himself in to the Oak Park Police Department later on Monday.
It was not clear if the teens are related or if they knew each other.
Officials have not said how the teen got ahold of the gun and it was not clear whether any adults may face charges in the case for leaving a gun unsecured.
Three people were reportedly arrested after a fight broke out near the scene of the investigation as a crowd gathered after the shooting. It was not clear if anyone was injured in the reported fight, and police did not release any information about the incident on Tuesday.
The teen's preliminary hearing was held Tuesday afternoon, and bond was set at $10,000.
His pretrial hearing is set for Oct. 12, before Judge Michael McClory in the Lincoln Hall of Justice.
