DEARBORN (WWJ) -- A non-fatal hit and run has led to an attempted murder charge for a Dearborn man
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced Monday that 38-uear-old Murtadha Jabbar Alizairij has been charged with Assault with Intent to Murder, Assault with Intent to do Great Bodily Harm, Felonious Assault, and Motor Vehicle Advisory.
It stems from a weekend incident where Alizairij allegedly hit a 40-year-old man from Dearborn with his car in the area of Michigan Avenue and Howe Street, and then fled the scene.
Authorities believe the crash was an intentional act as the man was crossing the street at around 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23.
The victim was found unresponsive by first responders on a nearby sidewalk. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
After the alleged attack, Alizarij left his vehicle several blocks away and fled on foot. He later called police from his home and turned himself in.
While police have said a review of the crash suggests that Alizairij intentionally hit the victim, no details have been released as to a motive in this case. The WCPO said more information will be introduced as evidence at the preliminary examination.
Alizairij was was arraigned Monday afternoon and received a 19th District Court before Judge Gene Hunt and received a $750,000 cash/surety bond. He will be back in court for a Probable Cause Conference scheduled for Sept. 3.
