DEARBORN (WWJ) - A 19-year-old woman was killed after she was shot in a suspected road rage incident in Dearborn.
Authorities said the incident took place around 9:45 p.m. on Friday. Dearborn Police officers were called to the intersection of Tireman Avenue and West Morrow Circle, on the border of Detroit, after receiving reports of shots fired at a vehicle.
Police believe that an earlier road rage situation near Warren Avenue and Southfield Freeway led to the shooting.
Evidence showed that a 2015 Chrysler 200 cut off a black 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was being driven by the victim, according to Dearborn Police. The victim then reportedly followed the Chrysler onto Tireman and Southfield Service Drive, “in what police believe was an effort to obtain the license plate information for the vehicle.”
As both vehicles reached the intersection of Tireman and West Morrow Circle, the suspect vehicle allegedly turned north onto Cheyenne Street and fired several gunshots at the victim’s vehicle. One of the bullets entered the vehicle through the windshield, fatally striking her, authorities said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two female passengers in the victim’s vehicle were not hurt during the incident.
“We are shocked and disturbed by this completely senseless act of violence that has shattered our community,” Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said. “Dearborn Police will continue to investigate this horrific incident and bring the suspected perpetrators to justice. We urge those with information about this crime to come forward.”
The Dearborn Police said they have three "persons of interest" in custody.
Officials said they are “shocked and saddened” by the incident.
“Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the victims who are mourning this tragic loss and undoubtedly, will be forever scarred by this incident,” Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud said. “This is a tremendous and traumatic loss for the greater Dearborn community. I thank the Dearborn, Detroit and Michigan State Police officers who responded and assisted at the scene Friday evening. I have full faith that our police department will dutifully investigate this incident and bring those involved to justice.”
