WAYNE COUNTY (WWJ) - Out with the old, in with the new, as the old saying goes; trucks, trailers and bulldozers all showed up to the long-closed Northland Center in Southfield on Friday to make way for a new multi-million dollar development.

Hailed as the largest shopping center in the world went it first opened 68 years ago, the Northland Center is being reduced to rubble in a $403 million redevelopment plan, according to the DetroitFree Press.

WWJ's Mike Campbell said from the destruction, crews will build large-scale housing, retail shops, office space, and community and residential life-style living to the site off M-10 and Greenfield Road.

Mike Campbell was on scene Friday morning as heavy machinery and equipment knocked down one multi-story building.

"It's just amazing to see this old mall and now it's coming down and just to watch the progress over the days, the weeks," one spectator, identified as Benjamin, said to WWJ's Mike Campbell.

The site, also known as Northland Mall, first opened on March 22, 1954 becoming the world's largest shopping complex at the time; it was also the first regional shopping center.

The mall had issues in its later years as anchor stores left the shopping center; Northland closed for good in 2015 before being sold to the city.
