DETROIT (WWJ) - An early morning fire at a unit in a Detroit apartment complex caused residents to evacuate the building on Thursday, officials say.

WWJ's Mike Campbell reported live from the scene at the New Center Pavilion Apartments located at 666 W Bethune Street in the shadow of the Fisher building, a couple of blocks over from Henry Ford Hospital.

While the fire is out, an investigation into how the flames erupted in a fifth-story unit is currently underway.

"It's a corner unit towards the back, if you will, of the building," Campbell explained. "It covers two sides, both two of the three windows of that unit anyway, are knocked out and the restoration crews boarded up the windows."

Campbell said debris from the early morning fire were still being cleaned up by workers and glass, window frames, screens and a couple of mattresses lay scattered about.

Unconfirmed reports state at least one tenant jumped from the building, but police haven't commented on the incident.

Restoration crews told Campbell that they had heard everyone got out safely and the fire was primarily contained to one unit, leaving the other apartments unaffected.

No other details were released by authorities. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
