DETROIT (WWJ) -- One teenager is dead and another is in hospitalized critical condition, according to police, after a double shooting on Detroit's east side.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison told reporters the shooting happened at around 7:30 a.m. Monday on Littlefield Street, in a neighborhood near Schaefer Rd. and Chicago.
"We were first drawn to the location because of our technology Shotspotter, and so our officers responded here very, very quickly, and found two individuals in their late teens suffering from gunshot wounds," Bettison said.
Both victims were taken to a local hospital where one of them was pronounced dead, the chief said.
Bettison said investigators found rifle casings on the scene "more than likely from an assault rifle," as well as 40mm handgun casings — so there could be two suspects.
Chief Bettison said no arrests have been made, but police are talking with some persons of interest.
Bettison promised that his department will find the person or people who gunned down these teens, who should have been headed to school.
"We do have video assets, and we will use all of our technology to locate them," Bettison said, adding: "I am working very closely with the Wayne County Prosecutor and the federal U.S. Attorney. And, so whatever charges I can bring, I will bring — but this was premeditated murder. My intention is that they spend the rest of their damn life in prison."
There is no information at this time as to what led to the shooting, but Bettison said over 40% of homicides in the city are over some kind of argument.
