DETROIT (WWJ) -- A long-shuttered Detroit institution is preparing to reopen this weekend.

The Detroit Children's Museum is holding a grand reopening on Saturday, after being closed to the public due to lack of funding since 2011.

Since that time, the museum — located at 6134 2nd Avenue, Detroit — has only operated in a limited capacity as a lending library for teachers.

The museum is now seeing new life after Detroit Public Schools secured an $800,000 grant to renovate and revitalize the building.

New additions include a tour of the Middle Ages, an exhibit on the history of communications, and an “Under the Sea” display.

The grand reopening event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 25. Admission to the event is free.

Going forward, the museum will open to the public for Community Days from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the fourth Saturday of each month.

The museum caters to all ages of children, with a small toddler playroom available.

Visitors will have a chance to view exhibits, visit several STEM and Art stations, and see a planetarium show. Each month will have different activities as well as fan favorites such as the fossil dig, magnet table, and young learners' exploration area. The museum will be open exclusively for school field trips on weekdays.
