Metro Detroit drivers paying $600 towing fees to retrieve cars abandoned in flood

(WWJ) -- Hundreds of people who got stuck on area freeways during this weekend’s flood are trying to get their cars back -- but not without a fee.

Many are voicing their displeasure that the bill to retrieve their vehicle is costing them a whopping $500 to $800.

Some drivers are saying that tow lots, which removed a slew of stranded vehicles across metro Detroit over the last several days, are also tacking on additional charges for every day that their car sits in the impound lot.

Meanwhile, others still have no idea where exactly their cars ended up after they had to abandon them on the flooded freeways.

Still, WWJ's Mike Campbell reports that the tow truck drivers, who were under contract with Michigan State Police, are defending the costs, noting that the jobs were much higher-risk than a standard situation.

Drivers who believe they are the victims of price gouging are being urged to file a complaint with the Michigan Attorney General’s consumer protection office.

The online form for consumer complaints can be found on the Michigan.gov website.
