DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit father was charged by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy in connection to the endangerment of his 1-year-old daughter.
It’s alleged that 35-year-old Kabamba Kyalangalilwa brought his daughter to a party at a home in the 12800 block of Braile Street, on the city’s west side at 11:30 a.m. June 28. He reportedly brought her to a neighboring home and asked the people, who were unfamiliar to him, if she could swim with their children. Authorities said the child then spent several hours in their care while he went back to the party.
Kyalangalilwa allegedly returned to pick her up five hours later “intoxicated, operating a motorcycle,” the Prosecutor’s Office said. The girl was reportedly placed on the motorcycle unsecured.
He allegedly drove at a high rate of speed before losing control. Both fell and slid along the sidewalk.
Authorities said the girl hit her head on a curb and sustained cuts to her head, face and legs. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Kyalangalilwa allegedly attempted to flee in a car before abandoning it and fleeing on foot.
“I do not recall in all of my years as a prosecutor and judge ever seeing a set of facts like this,” Prosecutor Kym Worthy said. “The alleged conduct of this defendant was way beyond atrocious and horrendous. This poor baby deserved the appropriate care, dedication and simple human decency. It is miraculous that she is still among the living.”
He was charged with second-degree child abuse, child abandonment, fourth-degree child abuse, operating while license suspended, revoked or denied and reckless driving.
Kyalangalilwa was arraigned on July 15. His bond was set at $100,000 cash/surety with a GPS tether. Bond was reduced to a $25,000 personal bond with a GPS tether and a curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. during a redetermination hearing on July 21.
His preliminary examination is scheduled for August 20.
