Detroit firefighter taken to hospital after suffering medical emergency while battling blaze on city's west side

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit firefighter is recovering after suffering a medical emergency while battling a fire early Monday morning.

Crews were called to a home on Stansbury Avenue, near Fenkell and Schaefer, around 4:30 a.m. on May 5.

While crews were working on the fire, one of the firefighters suffered a medical emergency, according to Detroit police.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he was alert and talking. He is expected to be okay.

Officials did not release any further information about the firefighter's medical emergency.

Authorities tell WWJ Newsradio 950 crews were on the scene within five minutes of receiving the call.

The two-story home was completely engulfed in flames, but no one was home at the time.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

In a separate fire Monday morning, crews were called to a home near Wyoming and Aurora around 1:30 a.m., where they found a person dead in the attic.
