DETROIT (WWJ) -- Some city firefighters are facing a whole lot of heat after being caught allegedly drinking on the job.

The Detroit Fire Department is conducting an investigation after Melvindale police were called to Hops & Barley Bar & Grill Friday night following reports of firefighters drinking inside and outside the bar.

Upon checking on the alleged disorderedly conduct, a Melvindale police officer noticed the rig stationed in a no-parking zone outside of the bar.

In the officer's report, he said that several firemen were inside who told him they were having dinner with a crew member who was leaving the department. He reported that he didn't see any alcohol and that nobody seemed intoxicated; however, alcohol tests told a different story.

The testing showed the driver of the fire engine had alcohol in their system.

Fire commissioner Chuck Simms promised an investigation will be wrapped up in about a week. In the meantime, at least two unidentified firefighters reportedly are suspended.

This incident is just the latest of numerous alcohol-related issues for the Detroit Fire Department. Last year, two high-profile incidents involved a fire engine that struck a vehicle, and a captain who was arrested after crashing his department SUV.

Mayor Mike Duggan announced a new program last year, working with the firefighters union to guide employees to get counseling and other assistance to help them deal with drinking problems.
