DETROIT (WWJ) - A 32-year old man is in police custody following what authorities are calling a domestic incident in Detroit where he was allegedly caught on camera physically forcing a woman into a van on Christmas.
The Detroit Police Department said in a update on the case on Wednesday that the man, a Detroit resident, was arrested after officers were able to identify him and the victim from a video of the incident that surfaced online.
In the video, a van with the lettering "Lakeside Budget" on the side can be seen pulling up in an alleyway near Gratiot and 8 Mile when a man jumped out and began attacking a woman. She was heard on video pleading with him to stop before he forced her into the vehicle.
"An argument took place," Assistant Chief David LeValley said in Wednesday's update. "It seems as though the victim exited the vehicle and was walking in the alley near 8 Mile and Schoenherr, that's where the video image was captured. The suspect, a 32-year-old male approached her, saw her walking, they had an argument, he forced her back into the vehicle and they went on their way from there."
Police said the have spoken to the woman and that she had sustained minor injuries to her face in the altercation.
Authorities are continuing their search for the suspect vehicle seen in the video in an attempt to gather more evidence.
LeValley credited the survelliance footage with assisting detectives in the case.
"The video was very helpful, obviously," the assistant chief added. "You can see from the video that the van appears to be a rental van so that provides some assistance with helping us locate individuals."
