Detroit man charged in Warren hit-and-run crash that killed 65-year-old man walking on Hoover

WARREN (WWJ) — A Detroit man is being held on $200,000 bond after allegedly hitting and killing a Warren man with a pickup truck before fleeing the scene last weekend.

Savion Jones was arraigned Thursday on one count of failing to stop at the scene of a crash resulting in death, a five-year felony.

The crash happened shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday, May 4 near the intersection of 11 Mile and Hoover Roads, according to the Warren Police Department.

Warren police and fire units responding to the scene found a 65-year-old man lying in the road with serious injuries. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say the vehicle that hit the victim, later determined to be a 2020 Dodge Ram pickup, fled the scene. Investigators learned that the truck "likely stopped at a nearby business parking lot after the crash."

The truck then fled the scene, with the driver never reporting the crash, according to police.

Investigators identified the owner of the truck, which was found Monday parked at a storage lot in Shelby Township, and determined he was out of the state at the time of the crash.

Through other investigative techniques, investigators were eventually able to link Jones, 35, as "being the likely driver of the Dodge Ram during the crash," officials said.

Jones was arrested Tuesday at his home in Warren, close to the scene of the crash. He was arrested without incident and later made statements to investigators the confirmed he was involved in the crash, police officials said.

Officials did not immediately clarify how Jones came to be in possession of the truck or whether the two men knew each other.

Jones pleaded not guilty to the charge of failing to stop at the scene of a crash resulting in death. Bond was set at $200,000 cash/surety only. If released, he will be required to wear a GPS tether.

Authorities say Jones has a previous felony fraud conviction and was charged as a habitual second offender. His next court date is scheduled for May 23.
