DETROIT (WWJ) — A 72-year-old Detroit man has been scheduled for a competency hearing after being charged with shooting his wife to death.
George Douglas Thomas, who was arraigned in late July on charges of first-degree murder and felony firearm, will appear in 36th District Court for a competency hearing on Nov. 6, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced on Friday.
Detroit police officers were called to a home on Five Points Street — near 7 Mile and Grand River on the city's west side — around 4:45 p.m. on July 26 after getting reports of a shooting in the area.
When officers showed up they found Thomas's wife, 53-year-old Shondra Davis-Thomas, lying in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the prosecutor's office.
She was rushed to the hospital, where she died.
Prosecutors say Thomas pulled out a gun and shot his wife multiple times, but authorities have not released any other details about the incident, including a possible motive.
Thomas was arraigned and remanded to jail on July 30 and referred for a competency evaluation at his probable cause conference on Aug. 6. That hearing has been scheduled for early November.
