
DETROIT (WWJ) -- A 40-year-old man faces potential life in prison after it's alleged that he shot and killed his girlfriend during an argument in a Detroit apartment.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced Thursday that Jelani Ahmed Shakoor of Detroit has been charged with Second-Degree Murder, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and two counts of Felony Firearm in connection with the fatal shooting of Alicia Ferguson of Detroit.
According to investigators, Shakoor and the victim got into a "verbal altercation" early the morning of Monday, June 17, at an an apartment complex in the 2200 block of West Grand Blvd. When the situation escalated, prosecutors said, Shakoor allegedly pulled a gun and shot Ferguson.
Police responded to the scene just after 3:30 p.m. to find the 36-year-old victim in a bedroom, with a gunshot wound to her neck. She was pronounced dead by EMS at the scene.
Shakoor was arranged in 36th District Court Thursday afternoon, and was remanded to jail without bond.
His next scheduled court appearance is a probable cause conference on June 27, followed by a preliminary exam set for July 2.
