DETROIT (WWJ) – A Detroit man accused of resorting to gun violence when an argument escalated has been charged with murder.

Nino Denzel-Wesley Red, 30, was charged with first-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm and felony firearm in connection with the death of 23-year-old Javonte Gardner, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced Monday.

The charges stem from a shooting near Tireman and St. Mary’s – just east of the Southfield freeway on the city’s west side – last week.

Detroit police were called to the scene around 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday, July 18. When they showed up Gardner was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen.

He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Prosecutors allege Red and Gardner had gotten into an argument and it escalated to the point where Reed pulled out a gun and shot him multiple times. Reed was arrested by Detroit police later the same day.

Officials did not say what sparked the initial argument and it was unclear whether the men knew each other before the alleged shooting.

Red was arraigned Friday in 36th District Court and remanded to jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 3.
