BLOOMFIELD TWP. (WWJ) — A Detroit man who had recently been released on parole is back behind bars after allegedly robbing a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Bloomfield Township on Monday.

The Bloomfield Twp. Police Department says 36-year-old Jonathan Jones has been charged with multiple felonies, including retail fraud.

Police were called to the store at the Bloomfield Town Square Shopping Center on Telegraph near Franklin around 11:30 a.m. after getting reports of a man who had just fled the store without paying for merchandise.

Responding officers found the suspect car pulling out of the shopping center parking lot and tried to pull Jones over on Telegraph, but he refused to stop. Other officers responded to the area and they were able to box him in at a red light.

Officers saw three bags of stolen merchandise in plain view and recovered two pairs of “side cutters” used to cut the security tags, police officials said.

While authorities did not say exactly what Jones allegedly stole from the store, it totaled $2,108.30.

Jones was arrested and taken to the Bloomfield Township Police Department. The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office authorized one count each of first-degree retail fraud, fourth-degree fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license (second offense) and theft detection removal.

Police officials said Jones had just been released on parole at the end of August, but did not release any information about his prior conviction. Records from the Michigan Department of Corrections show he was paroled on Aug. 28, and has various active and inactive sentences dating back nearly two decades.

He was given a $75,000 cash bond and his next court date is scheduled for Sept. 23.
