Detroit man charged with murder, mutilation in shotgun death of missing person found in vacant lot

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit man has been charged with murder, after authorities say he killed a 27-year-old man who had been reported missing.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy on Friday announced her case against 39-year-old Michael Lovell-J Knox in the slaying of Christian Epps.

Prosecutors allege the two got into a fight at a home near Conant and 7 Mile Rd. back on October 30, which ended when Knox shot Epps with a shotgun.

Investigators said Knox then disposed of the body, leaving it in a vacant lot in the 19300 block of Fleming Street, where police found it days later.

On Nov. 3, further investigation led police to a home on Glenfield Avenue, where Knox barricaded himself inside. Knox came out after a two-hour standoff with the Special Response Team and was arrested, authorities said.

Knox was arraigned in 36th District Court Friday morning on one count of Second-Degree Murder, one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, one count of Mutilation of a Dead Body, and two counts of Felony Firearm.

Michigan Department of Corrections records should Knox has a criminal record, having served prison time on felony convictions in Oakland County for armed robbery and felony firearm.

Following Friday's court appearance, he was remanded to jail without bond, where he'll await his next court date set for Dec. 3.
