Detroit mayor Mike Duggan ties the knot with Dr. Sonia Hassan

DETROIT (WWJ) -- It’s wedding bells for Detroit mayor Mike Duggan!

A statement from the mayor’s office says Duggan and Dr. Sonia Hassan were married in a family ceremony this past Saturday in Florida.

The wedding was performed by Imam Jihad Turk and Dan Duggan, the mayor’s brother.

The couple returned to Detroit on Tuesday after a brief honeymoon.

"We appreciate all the good wishes we’ve received since the announcement of our engagement in June,” Duggan and Hassan said in a statement. “We especially thank our families for their love and support.”

Back in the fall of 2019, Duggan became caught up in controversy surrounding the “Make Your Date” initiative -- Hassan's program at Wayne State University that combats preterm births.

Duggan faced accusations that he provided the program with preferential treatment, which he has denied.

In April of this year, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel cleared the mayor and several city staffers of any wrong-doing in the matter.

Duggan and Hassan announced their engagement in June.
