It'll be a well-earned retirement for Hemi, a beagle who spent his career sniffing out illegal agricultural items for U-S Customs and Border Patrol at Detroit's Metro Airport.

(WWJ) - A beagle with a nose for busting hundreds of illegal items at Detroit Metro Airport is calling it a career after two years with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

Hemi and his super sniffer have 460 hits on agricultural contraband, including bushmeat -- which is meat from wild mammals that live in the jungle, savannah, or wetlands -- plants, pests and a whole host of other smuggled items, officials said.

He was also tasked with finding harmful plant pests and foreign animal diseases.

As reported by FOX 2, Hemi began his job in April of 2022. Over his career, he helped screen most international baggage for prohibited items.

Detroit Director of Field Operations Marty C. Raybon said on X that Hemi's retirement is "well-deserved."

"He will spend his golden years at home with his handler and will be greatly missed by the CBP team at Metro Detroit Airport," Raybon said.
