DETROIT (WWJ) -- A 33-year-old woman will serve decades in prison after pleading guilty to murder for the death of her child, who was found in a freezer in their Detroit home.
According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, the body of 3-year-old Chayce Allen was discovered by police officers on June 24, 2022, as they were conducting a wellness check on the child at a home in the 12760 block of Monte Vista, on Detroit's northwest side.
The medical examiner determined that the boy's death was a homicide caused by blunt force head trauma, and that it was the boy's mother that had killed him and hid him in a freezer in March 2022, prosecutors said.
The mom, Azuradee France, was arrested and charged on June 26, 2022, with Felony Murder, First-Degree Child Abuse, Torture, and Concealing the Death of an Individual. She was remanded to jail without bond.
"The alleged facts in this case have astounded even the seriously jaded. Our children continue to be at risk – not just from gun violence but also from the alleged murderer that lives in the house with them," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy, in a statement released at that time.
More than two years later, on July 12, 2024, the WCPO said France pleaded guilty to a charge of second degree murder with a sentence agreement of 35 to 60 years in prison.
On Monday, France was sentenced according to the plea agreement, and the other charges against her were dismissed.
