DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit Police Chief James White says the city’s streets are safer as the holidays approach, thanks to “Operation Holiday Wrap.”
The operation, carried out in the 57th, 9th and 11th Precincts on the city’s east side between Dec. 7-9, led to 70 arrests and the recovery of 21 guns and 34.5 grams of cocaine.
U.S. Marshals and ATF agents assisted a special ops team in the operation, which officials say was planned out months in advance after identifying criminals they wanted off the streets in some of the higher-crime precincts.
“It takes time and a lot of effort and resources go into planning an operation like this,” U.S. Marshal Owen Cypher said during a press conference Tuesday.

Cypher says its nice to see guns and criminals come off the streets ahead of the holidays.
“Any time that you can take that number of guns, drugs and violent offenders off the street, it definitely feels good," Cypher said. "But it makes me feel very proud being a member of this community and this district.”
Among those arrested were a felony murder suspect, a home invasion suspect, a man wanted for rape, someone charged with assault with intent to murder and a parole violator, among many others.
Detroit Police Chief James White said the department will continue to "relentlessly pursue those who victimize our community, those who break the law, those who use weapons to resolve disputes."
"We are unapologetic about it," he said.
