Caught in the act: Detroit police bust men for illegally dumping tires in vacant lot

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Two men are facing hefty fines after Detroit police caught them illegally dumping tires in a vacant parking lot in broad daylight Wednesday afternoon.

Cleanup efforts were underway Thursday at the site of an abandoned storage company on Eaton Street, near Fenkell and Wyoming on the city’s west side.

Detroit police have made cracking down on illegal dumping a major emphasis, and had set up cameras at the abandoned property, which has been a past dumping ground.

On Wednesdays, their cameras caught two men making seven trips to the lot in a pickup truck, dumping around 100 tires before they were caught in the act.

Lt. Matthew Fulgenzi said after the men were spotted on camera, a team of DPD officers quickly made their way to the area and began canvassing the neighborhood and soon caught the men in the act of dumping tires.

Both men were taken into police custody and could each be facing fines of up to $10,000.

“The message is clear -- we’re not going to tolerate this type of behavior in our community,” Fulgenzi said. “We will continue to hold those responsible for dumping crimes and we’re going to utilize all of our resources to stop dumping in our city.”

WWJ’s Jon Hewett asked whether the men had been dumping the tires on behalf of a local business, and police only said that the investigation was still ongoing.

Police are asking anyone who sees illegal dumping happening across the city to report it on the city’s website.
