DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit police officer is hospitalized and a teenager is dead following an officer-involved shooting, late Thursday night on the city's east side.
It all unfolded around 10:30 p.m. in a neighborhood near I-94 and Morang.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said officers were on routine patrol in the area because there has been a rash of breaking-and-entering incidents recently. Officers saw three people with masks on near a building and stopped to investigate.
One of those people, age 16, was detained and is in custody, but the other two ran away.
Police caught one of the suspects who fled and there was a brief struggle, Bettison said.
"The suspect was reaching for a handgun, trying to get it, was able to get it and shot one of our officers in the left hand," Bettison said. "At that point the officer, officers returned fire." The suspect was shot and killed.
Police have not released any information about the third suspect who remains at large, but Bettison is asking for the community's help in finding him.
"The community has been great in stepping up, and so if you know who the suspect is, please, please 1-800-SPEAK UP, you can even call 911 and let us know because we need to apprehend him ASAP."
The officer who was shot was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.
Michigan State Police are assisting in the investigation.
