Detroit rapper 'Supa Emcee' charged with murder in fatal stabbing of his girlfriend in Westland
WESTLAND (WWJ) -- A rapper from Highland Park has been ordered held without bond, charged with premeditated murder in the death of his girlfriend in Westland.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy on Thursday announced the case against 46-year-old Jimmie Lee Brown, who also known in Detroit by his rap name "Supa Emcee", according to reports.
Investigators say 49-year-old Kelly Ann Mays, who had spoken out in the media about domestic violence, was stabbed to death in her Westland home on Sunday, Jan. 7.
At around 6:15 p.m. that evening, Westland police officers responded to an apartment complex in the 36700 block of McKinney Drive in Westland. When they arrived, they found Mays dead inside the bedroom of her apartment unit.
Authorities say she had multiple lacerations to her neck and her chest.
It's alleged, according to prosecutors, that Brown stabbed Mays with a knife, fatally wounding her, and then fled the scene.
He turned himself in to police later that night.
Brown was arraigned in 18th District Court on Wednesday on one count of First-Degree Murder, and was remanded to jail without bond.
He will be back in court for his probable cause conference on Jan. 25, followed by a preliminary exam set for Feb. 1.
Mays, who had two daughters, was profiled in a Detroit News article last summer focused on how domestic violence disproportionately affects the Black community. The newspaper said Mays discussed a controlling and abusive relationship that in 2010 left her hospitalized.
Brown faces life in prison with parole if he is convicted as charged.
