Metro Detroit realtor's Stafford jersey exchange postponed

Glover Agency announced Thursday night the realtor's planned jersey exchange has been postponed 'at the request of the NFL.' MORE DETAILS HERE. This is a previous report on Glover's announcement of the event:

Former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams are coming to town. You could almost say it’s something out of a Hollywood script: in order to earn their first postseason win in more than three decades, the team must beat the man who called Detroit home for 12 seasons, but never got the Lions over the hump.

While much has been made out of fans calling for Stafford jerseys to be “banned” at Ford Field for Sunday night’s game, that’s not gonna happen — even if one bar right around the corner says they’re turning away anyone in a Stafford jersey.

But Metro Detroit realtor Jeff Glover is doing his part to make sure Lions fans are turning up Sunday night supporting current players.

“If you go to any Lions game today, the crowd is still littered with Stafford jerseys,” Glover told WWJ’s Jeremy Jenkins. “And, you know, we’re in the playoffs with a new quarterback, we should support our new quarterback. And we’re now playing our previous quarterback, so he’s an opponent.

Glover, broker and owner of Glover Agency Realtors — and a “diehard” Lions fan —  is giving away 1,000 new Lions jerseys in exchange for gently used Lions jerseys. The turned-in Stafford jerseys will be donated to homeless shelters in need of clothing in Los Angeles, where Stafford has played the last three seasons since being traded in 2021 for Jared Goff and three draft picks.

In exchange, Lions fans will be able to choose new jerseys of three players: Goff, WR Amon-Ra St. Brown and DE Aidan Hutchinson.

Glover tells WWJ he was going to do the jersey exchange regardless of the team’s first-round opponent, but the visit from Stafford makes it that much more exciting.

“Obviously, I had to put in the order for jerseys a while ago in order to get this many in, in that short of time. And it just so happened that we ended up playing the Rams,” Glover said. “We waited until we knew who we were playing to release it, but I wanna be able to support Lions fans who wanna get their Stafford jersey traded in for another player and we purchased 1,000 jerseys for that purpose.”

Like a win over the Rams this weekend would, the jersey exchange represents something of a “turning of the page.”

“Listen, at the end of the day, I appreciate what the Staffords have done for the city and they’re in a new city now where I’m sure they have an opportunity to do some great things there, and we have a quarterback who’s excited about our city and I think we should support him,” Glover said.

As for the Thomas Magee’s “ban” on Stafford jerseys, Glover thinks that’s “a little bit too far.”

“There’s still gonna be some Stafford fans who want to keep their jersey as a sign of appreciation or maybe for memories,” he said. “But I believe there’s also a lot of fans out there that look at the fact that we never won anything with Stafford. We never won a playoff game, we never won the NFC North, and Jared Goff has done that in three years, and we had Stafford for over a decade. So I think from a fan’s perspective, I think we’re better off supporting our current quarterback than our previous one.”

Friday’s jersey exchange will happen at Twin Peaks Restaurant in Livonia, located at 20120 Haggerty Rd, right off of I-275, just south of 8 Mile Rd. While the event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Glover doesn’t think the 1,000 jerseys will last that long, so fans are encouraged to get out there early.
