DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit homeowner woke up Thursday morning to a brand new Jeep on their property -- only it was stolen and wrecked after someone crashed in through their fence.

Detroit police are currently at the scene of the bizarre incident in the city's historic Indian Village neighborhood, located between Mack Avenue and East Jefferson Avenue, where a new Jeep Cherokee ended up after being swiped from a nearby Chrysler assembly plant.

WWJ's Charlie Langton spoke with the homeowner, James, who was shocked to discover the crashed vehicle in his yard off Kercheval and Burns.

"We were asleep. We heard this huge crash. We came out and there was a stolen car that came through over here and ended up in our vegetable garden," James told Langton.

Langton said bits and pieces of wood from the now destroyed fence littered the street as police processed the scene.

"Lots of damage," Langton described. "James does have insurance -- I guess that's the good news -- but Detroit police then say that the suspect or suspects fled the vehicle."

The suspect or suspects remain on the run as detectives work to piece together who they are and how they managed to take a new vehicle right of the lot at the Chrysler Conner Assembly Plant off Jefferson Avenue, Langton said.

Police have not released additional details in the case. The investigation is ongoing.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WWJ LIVE for the latest updates.
