Residents warned about real estate scam involving “free homes” in Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Leaders at the city of Detroit have put out a warning to residents about a new real estate scam.

Attorney Lawrence Garcia says Ramzu Yunus has been falsely telling Detroiters that they have the right to occupy empty homes in the city without owning the property.

"Like a snake oil salesman in the movies, Ramzu Yunus came to town this summer with a story that sounds too good to be true," Garcia wrote in a statement. "He has falsely promised 'free homes' and has falsely told Detroiters they have the right to 'occupy' houses in Detroit – even without owning the property. No one should buy what Mr. Yunus is selling."

Garcia says Unus is not only wrong about the way -- he is dangerous.

The scammer was involved in an armed standoff just a few weeks ago before he was arrested.

According to Wayne County Circuit Court, Yunus is now out of custody and hinting that violence is part of his future plans.

Court officials have ordered Yunus to stop issuing fake paperwork that claims to create ownership rights for Detroit property.

The Court has also ordered him not to trespass on land he does not own.

Garcia warns there are no “free houses” in Detroit, and squatting and trespassing on property you do not own is a crime.
