DETROIT (WWJ) — A man who worked as a security guard at a Detroit school has been charged with sexually assaulting a student.
Trevon Leviticus Ziglar, 23, was arraigned Sunday, Jan. 12 on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct as a school employee with a child between 13 and 15 years old.
The alleged incident happened around 5 p.m. on May 20, 2024 at Cornerstone Jefferson-Douglass Academy on Nevada Street on the city’s east side, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
While the prosecutor’s office has not released many details surrounding the alleged assault, WDIV reports Ziglar was caught with a 14-year-old in a stairwell inside the school.
During Ziglar’s arraignment, prosecutors said video evidence showed Ziglar and the student entering the stairwell and leaving about 20 minutes later, according to the WDIV report.
Ziglar also allegedly tried to get the 14-year-old victim to “silence the witness” who reported the incident, according to the report.
Ziglar was remanded to jail and his next court date has been scheduled for Jan. 21.
When school officials learned of the alleged assault, they contacted the security company Ziglar worked for and he was subsequently fired and banned from the school, according to the report.
Cornerstone officials released the following statement to WDIV:
“The incident occurred eight months ago. At that time, we immediately contacted the Detroit Police and simultaneously notified the outside security company to prohibit the individual from entering any Cornerstone property. We have been and are still fully cooperating with the police.
The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority and we continue to take all necessary actions to ensure they are in a safe environment."
