DETROIT (WWJ) – A 15-year-old Detroit boy is facing charges after bringing a BB gun to school and pulling it out in a classroom.
The teen allegedly brought the gun to Marygrove High School on Tuesday and a parent sent a video of the teen pulling it out in a classroom and pointing it at another student. The video shows the other student running away as others laugh.
The teen, whose name was not released, was arrested on Wednesday. At the time, authorities were not sure if it was a real gun or a BB gun.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged the 15-year-old with possession of a weapon in a school zone, saying the fact that it was a BB gun “does not diminish the severity” of his actions.
“We are all hypersensitive right now about deadly weapons being brought into schools and the carnage that can occur as a result,” Worthy said in a press release “The alleged actions of this respondent simply cannot be tolerated. We are alleging that this weapon was displayed and later discovered to be a BB Gun.”
The alleged incident happened on Tuesday, the same day an 18-year-old gunman in Texas opened fire at an elementary school, killing 19 children and two teachers.
The Detroit teen was scheduled for a preliminary hearing Thursday afternoon.
