DETROIT (WWJ) - A 15-year-old Detroit boy is facing charges for allegedly shooting another teen to death at a hotel on New Year’s Eve.

Detroit police were called to a hotel in the 5770 block of the Southfield Freeway around 3:30 a.m. on Dec. 31 on reports of a shooting.

When officers showed up to the hotel room, they found a 15-year-old boy unresponsive in the bathroom with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

The suspect, whose name wasn’t released, allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots into the hotel room, striking the other teen. Prosecutors did not disclose a possible motive in the case.

Detroit police arrested the teen on Jan. 4.

He was charged with one count of second-degree murder, one count of discharge at a building causing death and two counts of felony firearm.

The teen is not being charged as an adult, but has been adult designated, meaning if convicted, the judge would have the option of sentencing the respondent as a juvenile, or as an adult, or to fashion a blended juvenile sentence with the option of imposing an adult sentence if the juvenile is not rehabilitated.

A preliminary hearing was held Tuesday at the Lincoln Hall of Justice and he was ordered to be held at Juvenile Detention Facility. A preliminary exam is scheduled for Jan. 20.
