(WWJ) -- A 17-year-old from Detroit is facing murder charges for his alleged role in a multi-car crash last week in Sterling Heights that left a 20-year-old woman dead.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido announced Monday the teen is being charged with felony murder and second degree murder, punishable by up to life in prison.

The teen, whose identity was not disclosed, allegedly stole a Jeep from the Orchard Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership at 30 Mile and Van Dyke in Washington Township on before leading police on a high-speed chase southbound along Van Dyke. Three other vehicles were also reportedly stolen in the incident.

The chase on Thursday was called off around 26 Mile Road, but the vehicle continued southbound on Van Dyke, according to police. Reports say the vehicle ran multiple red lights as it reached speeds upward of 100 mph.

The pursuit came to an end at Van Dyke and 15 Mile when it crashed into a pole and two other vehicles in the area. The suspect was taken to a hospital and held in police custody.

A 20-year-old woman who was uninvolved in the theft of the vehicles was killed instantly, police said. Police are still searching for the others involved in the theft of the vehicles.

The driver was arraigned Monday in Sterling Heights District Court and issued a $100,000 cash/surety bond.

He was also charged with two counts of fleeing a police officer -- one first degree count and one second degree.

"Our county is grieving the tragic death of a young woman," Lucido said in a press release. "This blatant disregard for the lives of others must stop. These individuals who threaten our communities will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

The prosecutor's office noted multiple jurisdictions are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. While the investigation is still open, law enforcement agencies are also searching for others who were involved in the incident.
