DOWNTOWN DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit's 18th annual tree lighting ceremony will kick off the holiday season on Friday at Campus Martius Park and people can expect a night full of star-studded entertainment.

On Nov. 19, the Michigan-grown, 65-ft Norway spruce decked out in ornaments at 800 Woodward Ave. will be illuminated by 20,000 LED multi-colored lights -- following a countdown by Santa himself at 7 p.m.

Santa won't be the only star making an appearance, though.

Figure skaters will be taking to the park's ice rink following its official opening, including Olympic and U.S. champion figure skater, Ashley Wagner.

Metro Detroit ice skating clubs will also be showing off their skills.

Guests will also be able to watch music performances at the Campus Martius stage, including "The Voice" season 20 winner, Cam Anthony and the Detroit Concert Choir.

And if you're feeling like mixing up the fun, carriage rides will be offered and the Downtown Detroit Markets along with the Cadillac Lodge is nearby for some drinks and holiday shopping.

Located down the street at Beacon Park is a holiday celebration just for the little ones at 1901 Grand River Ave. with their own Children's Tree. Their tree lighting ceremony begins at 6 p.m.

There will also be live holiday music and an interactive lighting feature totaling more than 125,000 LED lights, including a "Swinging Bells" lighting installation.

If you're feeling hungry, don't fret, as both events will have food trucks.

The Downtown Detroit Partnership and DTE Foundation are anticipating thousands to attend and join in on the festivities at The Rink and stage at Campus Martius Park.

The Detroit Tree Lighting event will begin at 5 p.m. and end at midnight.

The Light Up Beacon Park will begin at 5 p.m. and end at 11 p.m.

Masks are encouraged and will be distributed at the event especially where social distancing is not possible.

COVID-19 vaccinations will also be offered onsite for free.
