ROMULUS (WWJ) -- A Friday arrest at Detroit Metro Airport is the tip of the iceberg in a disturbing case of violent threats made against faculty and students at a Wisconsin university, allegedly sent by the 32-year-old Jackson County man who is now in federal custody.

Arvin Raj Mathur has been charged in connection with a federal investigation into a series of death threats sent to nine people at the University of Madison-Wisconsin, all of whom had prior contact with Mathur, who was enrolled at the school until Dec. 2021.

Several of the threats included revolting descriptions -- such as skinning children alive or mixing their flesh in with burger meat, according to the Detroit News.

In case files that were unsealed last Wednesday, investigators sketch a terrifying timeline beginning in August 2022.

Various professors, staff members and graduate students received emails telling them to call police and hire lawyers and that the sender was planning to kill them and those close to them.

The most recent threats alluded to an upcoming trip the sender was planning to Madison, with one message listing Mar. 15 as the suspect's arrival date.

Investigators were able to tie some of the emails to Mathur's Gmail account, with the correspondence originating from locations in Copenhagen, Denmark, where Mathur was thought to be studying at another university.

Federal authorities flagged flights Mathur had booked from Copenhagen to Amsterdam and from Amsterdam to Detroit.

Mathur was taken into custody at Detroit Metro Airport Friday night and remains housed in the St. Clair County Jail. He is currently being held without bond pending a detention hearing on Tuesday.
