(WWJ) Divers are back out in Lake St. Clair on Monday, searching for a man in his 30s who went missing on Lake St. Clair over the weekend.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division has been leading the operation that began at around 8 p.m. Sunday, after reports and that a man went into the lake and never resurfaced.
Michigan State Police has also been providing land assistance and the U.S. Coast Guard was also at the scene, on the north end of the lake at Anchor Bay, off Jefferson Ave.
Macomb County Sheriff's Sgt. Renee Yax told WWJ's Sandra McNeill that the divers are using sonar — a piece of equipment that Yax said looks like a large fish finder.
"It can send signals underneath a boat that bounce back up and kind of show our dive team if there's something, a large item, underneath a boat," Yax explained. "And in turn, when they find that large item they can send... a robot that can go underwater. It has a light on it so they can kind of get a better view of what they're looking at."
WXYZ reported that the man, who was not wearing a life jacket, was with more than a dozen other people on a boat when he decided to go for a swim. When the man failed to return to the boat, his friends called 911.
While Yax noted that the water was rougher than normal when the man went into the water.
She said the divers would remain out as long as they can on Monday, but they will be keeping an eye out on the sky. with severe weather in the forecast.
That's something she advises every boater to do.
"Lake St. Clair is a very large lake, and the storms move in quickly," Yax said. "So, we would always suggest anyone that's going to go boating for the day to check the weather report. That's number one, because once the waves start and the wind picks up, the storms blow in. And we always hear, 'I didn't think it would come in that quick.' But they really do."
Officials have asked residents to please avoid the area while the search continues.
