(WWJ) On this Opening Day for deer hunting season, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is having some unforeseen technical issues with the licensing system that may have prevented some hunters from purchasing a base license or deer kill tags.

The DNR says they are working to resolve these issues, which are occurring across multiple states.

DNR conservation officers will be patrolling throughout the season. In light of these circumstances, the officers will take these special “circumstances into consideration” while making contact with hunters.

In the meantime, hunters who could not get a legally issued kill tag for their deer due to system outages should use a temporary kill tag using materials they have on hand.

The temporary tag should include the same information found on a kill tag:

Identification of the hunter.
The date the deer was killed.
The sex of animal.
Number of antler points on each side.

Hunters who tried to purchase the license on the website should use this temporary kill tag until their legal tag arrives in the mail.

A friendly reminder from the DNR: Hunters should always carry proper identification in the field.

The DNR will continue to post updates on their website as they try to fix the problem.
