WOODHAVEN (WWJ) -- Downriver cops channeled their inner children on Thursday during a sledding competition for a cause.

A big crowd turned out at Civic Center Park in Woodhaven for the first ever law enforcement sled race on what locals call "the big hill," in Woodhaven's Civic Center Park.

Over a dozen Downriver police departments competed in the event, conceived by the Woodhaven Police Department, raising $10,000 for charity.

Brian McNeal, of the Detroit DEA, said he was following all the chatter on Facebook with the local police departments and he decided to come out and support.

"It's just awesome to get out with the community and bring everyone together there's a few days off because of this snow and we came out to have fun," said McNeal.

Woodhaven resident Steve Hoover said WPD are trying to make the sledding competition an annual event that they can do in order to raise money for charities.

"Whichever police officer wins -- or whichever department wins -- they pick a charity of their choice and then anybody that wants to make donations can make donations," said Woodhaven resident Steve Hoover. "So it's a good way to fundraise, as well."

The trophy went to Officer Ryan Zimmers of the Woodhaven PD.
