'I almost lost my life tonight': Clerk shaken up after Downtown Detroit gas station destroyed by suspected arson
DETROIT (WWJ) - A downtown Detroit gas station is destroyed, leaving employees shaken up after someone allegedly lit fire to the building on Thursday morning.
"I almost lost my life tonight," the clerk of BP gas station and "to-go" store on Jefferson Avenue at Chene St. east of Downtown Detroit told WWJ's Mike Campbell who reported live from the scene.
According to Campbell, a man who had a disagreement with the clerk allegedly poured gas inside the building before igniting the blaze and taking off on foot.
Detroit police did not confirm any details, but did say they were investigating a possible arson case at the location on Thursday morning. No injuries were reported.
A man, identified as Nicholas, told Campbell he witnessed the incident, which unfolded in a matter of minutes.
"Cross the street, guy was coming out and he poured more gasoline, you know, before he ran off and his arm caught on fire and started pulling it out and he ran across the street and ran down Chene," Nicholas said.
Investigators added they haven't identified what kind of accelerant was used and they were still looking into the circumstances that led up to the fire.
No other details were released.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned to WWJ LIVE for the latest updates.
