ROMULUS (WWJ) -- Cancellations, delays and frustration continue at Detroit Metro Airport on Friday, New Year's Eve, following the latest surge of COVID-19 in Michigan and across the U.S.
Airline officials say staffing shortages are the cause of the problems plaguing the airport in Romulus for more than a week — just in time for the holiday travel rush.
Delta Air Lines and partner airline SkyWest were the initial airlines affected at Metro, but the list of airlines has expanded to include Spirit, American, Frontier, and Jet Blue.
All of those airlines are advising passengers to check before they head out the door for departures, or to pick up airline passengers who are scheduled to arrive Friday and this weekend.
As of late Friday morning, there were more than 20 flight departures and more than 30 arrivals listed as "delayed" or "canceled" at Detroit Metro ... and the number was expected to rise.
The good news: Security wait times have been on the shorter side, at 10 to 15 minutes in both the McNamara Terminal and North Terminal.
Those going to the airport should note that face masks are required for everyone while inside the terminals.
