Detroit police: Suspects seen on camera buying snacks, drinks at gas station after setting fire to nearby auto shop

Suspects seen buying snacks after alleged arson

DETROIT (WWJ) — Authorities are asking for help tracking down a pair of men caught on surveillance camera buying snacks at a Detroit gas station moments after allegedly setting a business on fire.

Detroit police and fire officials on Friday released photos of the suspects in the gas station in the early morning hours of Sunday, Dec. 8, 2024.

Around 1:30 a.m., the suspects set fire to a local auto center on McNichols near Meyers on the city’s west side, according to the Detroit Fire Investigation Division, a joint task force between the Detroit Police and Fire Departments.

Authorities say the suspects then drove to a nearby gas station to buy snacks and drinks. They were seen entering and exiting the gas station parking lot in a red Dodge Caravan, officials said.

The suspects were seen on Project Green Light cameras inside the gas station. One of them was seen drinking blue Gatorade in the store.

One suspect is described as a Black male with medium complexion and braided hair, wearing a black hoodie, jeans, and black shoes with white trim.

The other suspect is described as a Black male, light complected, with braids and wearing a black hoodie, dark jeans, and dark shoes.

Authorities did not reveal the extent of the fire damage to the auto shop or a possible motive in the case.
