Detroit Public Schools officer dies after trying to break up fight: police

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A public safety officer for the Detroit Public Schools Community District has died after attempting to break up a fight near Henry Ford High School.

Officials say the incident took place Thursday afternoon in the area of Vaughan Street and Trojan Avenue. The officer, Freddie Wilson, was rushed to a hospital and was listed in critical condition. He was pronounced dead that night.

According to authorities, the fight involved people who were not DPS students.

Police also say they do not have evidence that weapons were involved in the incident.

DPS and Detroit police homicide detectives are currently investigating the incident.

A cause of death hasn't been determined.

Superintendent Nikolai Vitti says he and the DPSCD School Board are saddened by the "sudden" death of Wilson, an officer who has been with the district for more than 20 years.
