Driver was drunk with beer in his truck when he hit and killed electric bicyclist in Eastpointe, prosecutors say

EASTPOINTE (WWJ) -- A Detroit man is facing several felony charges in connection with the death of a man riding an electric bicycle in Eastpointe.

Clinton Donzell Laws, 52, was arraigned Eastpointe District Court Friday in connection with the fatal crash on Tuesday, August 8.

According to investigators, Laws was under the influence of alcohol while behind the wheel of his truck in Eastpointe when he hit the bicyclist at the intersection of Gratiot Ave. and Stephens.

The victim, whose name was not released. was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries.

Police said they found full and empty alcohol bottles in the suspect’s vehicle, along with a cooler in the truck filled with ice and full beer bottles.

The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office announced that Laws has been charged with Operating while Intoxicated Causing Death (a 15 year felony), Driving While License Suspended Causing Death (a 15 year felony), and Driving with an Open Alcohol Container in a Vehicle (a 90 day misdemeanor).

Bond was set for $600,000 cash/surety only, no 10%. If he is able to post bond, a magistrate ordered that Laws must wear an alcohol/GPS tether, be on home confinement, cannot use drugs or alcohol, and cannot leave the state.

“This incident serves as a reminder that the choices we make have far-reaching consequences and we will seek accountability for the loss that occurred,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido, in a statement.

Laws will be back in court for a probable cause hearing on August 22, followed by a preliminary exam scheduled for August 29.
