Unbelted driver involved in single rolled over crash on I-275 struck by screwdriver in vehicle

HURON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A man was injured in a single-vehicle rollover crash on I-275 in Wayne County Friday morning -- but not for reasons you'd expect.

Michigan State Police said troopers were dispatched to the scene of a serious crash on northbound I-275 freeway and S. Huron Road in Huron Charter Township, just south of Detroit Metro Airport, around 11 a.m.

Multiple callers stated the crash involved only one truck and the vehicle had rolled over during the wreck.

When troopers arrived at the scene, they encountered the driver who appeared to have been hit by something inside his vehicle.

Based on their preliminary investigation, troopers say the driver -- identified as a 64-year-old Tennessee man -- was traveling in the right lane when his vehicle drifted to the right shoulder and crashed into a concrete barrier.

The man was not wearing a seatbelt, troopers said, and unsecured screwdriver in his truck flew forward during the incident and struck him.

The 64-year-old was taken to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries were not released.

MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw said the incident serves as a reminder for all drivers to wear their seatbelt, not only because it is the law, but they also save lives.

"Not only do they protect you when the airbags deploy, they will keep you behind the wheel in a rollover," Shaw added. "As soon as you start your vehicle, fasten your seatbelt."

MSP said drivers will want seek alternative routes as northbound I-275 remains closed at S. Huron Road as they continue to investigate.
