PONTIAC (WWJ) -- The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office office is searching for an unknown driver who hit three people in downtown Pontiac, killing one of them, and fled the scene.

The crash happened shortly after 11 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, along North Saginaw Street, north of East Huron Street.

According to investigators, three pedestrians were crossing N. Saginaw in the crosswalk when they were hit by a black vehicle — possibly a smaller SUV.

Crash investigators believe the traffic signal was flashing red for N. Saginaw Street traffic when the pedestrians crossed. The black vehicle made a right turn onto E. Huron and continued westbound, never stopping after the crash, officials said

A 51-year-old Pontiac man was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries. His name is not being released pending notification of his family.

The other two pedestrians — identified as 29-year-old women from Indiana — both remained hospitalized on Thursday. Officials said one was in serious condition and the other was stable.

An investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction unit is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or has any helpful information is asked to call the OCSO at 248-858-4950.
