SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - State police are continuing to investigate an overnight freeway shooting after a driver said someone open fired at him multiple times on I-696 in Oakland County.

Michigan State Police said a driver reported that he and his passenger were shot at around 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17, while traveling west on I-696 near Evergreen in the City of Southfield.

According to the driver, he was in the left lane when a speeding, white SUV pulled up behind him. The man moved over to the middle left lane, but instead of passing him, the SUV slowed down beside the caller's vehicle.

"When he looked over, he observed a Black male with short dreads pointing a gun at them," state police said in a 7:14 a.m. update about the case. "The caller and his passenger both stated they heard 4-5 shots come from the suspect vehicle."

No one was injured in the incident and the victim driver pulled off the freeway at the Orchard Lake Road exit while the SUV continued heading west on I-696.

MSP said no bullet holes were found on the victim's vehicle. The freeway was shut down while investigators swept the roadway for evidence.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information has been asked to contact the MSP tip line at 855-MICH-TIP or Crime Stoppers at 800-Speak-Up (1-800-773-2587).
