HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) A Michigan State Police (MSP) patrol car was struck during the investigation of a motorcycle crash in Highland Park that left a man in critical condition.

MSP said it happened shortly after midnight on Sunday, May 17. Troopers responded to a motorcycle crash on the eastbound Davison near Second Avenue.

Authorities said they arrived and found a 30-year-old Clawson man on the ground, but breathing.

Their preliminary investigation revealed a car lost control and struck the median, coming to rest blocking the left lane of westbound Davison. The motorcyclist, in the left lane, could not avoid the stalled vehicle and struck it.

First responders rushed him to the hospital, where he's listed in critical condition.

According to authorities, while troopers investigated the crash, the driver of a Chevy Malibu slammed into the patrol car that was blocking the scene to protect troopers.

Troopers determined the driver to be impaired. MSP said he became combative when they tried to take him into custody.

No one was hurt.

"This is the second day in a row that one of our patrol cars have been hit by an impaired driver," First Lieutenant Mike Shaw said. ".... As I have said many times before, there is never a reason to drive impaired, ever."
