TROY (WWJ) - A drunk driver who allegedly rode up on curbs and took out mailboxes in Troy was arrested over the Thanksgiving weekend after he parked his heavily damaged vehicle in the parking lot of a local fire department.

The Troy Police Department said they received word of a possible drunk driver on Friday, Nov. 22, at around 7:10 p.m. after a caller observed a dark-colored sedan smashing into mailboxes and curbs on Maple Road, near John R. Road.

The caller stated the driver then turned into the parking lot of Troy Fire Station #4 at 2117 E. Maple.

Officers responded to the fire station and spoke with employees who directed them to an unknown, heavily damaged vehicle that recently entered the parking lot.

Police approached a dark-colored 2013 Ford Taurus and observed two flat tires, damage to the rims and damage to the bumper.

The driver, identified as a 56-year-old male from Sterling Heights, spoke with officers, but he slurred his words and his breath smelled like alcohol, the department stated.

"The driver was asked to perform several sobriety evaluations, to which he did but the officers noted he performed poorly. He submitted to a preliminary breath test with a result of .10%," police said.

The driver was arrested and taken to the Troy Police Lock-Up Facility where he agreed to submit to a Chemical Breath Test.

The test came back with results of .10%. and .09%, the department said.

The driver was issued a citation for Operating while Intoxicated.
